Funding will support medical care, adoption stipends and a new initiative designed to help senior dogs find homes sooner
STATEN ISLAND, NY / CINCINNATI, OH — August 31, 2026 — Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue is proud to announce that it has been selected as a recipient of The Grey Muzzle Organization’s 2026 Pathways Home Grant, receiving $15,000 to support senior dogs in its care.
The grant will help Louie’s Legacy provide critical medical care for older dogs while also addressing one of the biggest barriers senior dogs can face when searching for forever homes: the perceived cost of caring for an aging pet.
As part of the grant-funded initiative, Louie’s Legacy has launched a new reduced adoption fee program for eligible senior dogs. Dogs who reach 75% of the rescue’s average length of stay for their age group will become eligible for a reduced adoption fee, helping make adoption more accessible and giving these deserving dogs an additional boost toward finding families.
The first group of senior dogs participating in the new reduced-fee initiative includes Kassie in Louie’s Legacy’s Northeast program, as well as Titan, Aldean, Harry Pawter, David Bowie, Jack Black, Danica, Lidia, Leo and Kuma in the rescue’s Midwest program.
“Senior dogs have so much to offer, but unfortunately, they can be overlooked simply because of their age,” said Emily Gear, President and Founder of Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue. “We want to change that. These dogs deserve the same excitement, attention and opportunities as younger animals, and sometimes removing even one barrier can make the difference between waiting in a foster home and going home with a family.”
The grant will also support the continuation of the Hiram Fund, a program created by Louie’s Legacy to help senior dogs with significant medical needs who may otherwise have difficulty finding adopters. Through the Hiram Fund, eligible dogs can receive an adoption stipend to help offset the cost of ongoing or anticipated medical care, giving adopters additional support while helping senior dogs get the second chance they deserve.
Senior dogs frequently spend longer periods in rescue than younger animals. While some adopters may hesitate because of concerns about age-related medical needs or future veterinary expenses, Louie’s Legacy hopes its new initiatives will demonstrate that adopting a senior dog can be incredibly rewarding, and that age does not diminish a dog’s capacity to love, play, bond and become an important part of a family.
The reduced adoption fee initiative is designed to be proactive rather than reactive. Instead of waiting until a senior dog has spent an exceptionally long time in rescue, Louie’s Legacy will monitor length of stay and reduce fees once dogs reach the established threshold for their age group.
“We’re incredibly grateful to The Grey Muzzle Organization for recognizing the importance of creating pathways home for senior dogs,” Gear said. “This funding allows us to address the medical needs that can make senior dogs harder to place, while also helping us tackle the adoption barriers that keep them waiting. We’re excited to see these golden oldies get the attention they deserve.”
